Moon: Through our eyes and dreams

How do the people in Earth view Moon?

We all know that Sun is the source of light energy with which we see objects. All the solar bodies rotates on its own axis.

Here we consider Sun, Earth and Moon. Sun is the centre of the orbit and other two are rotating objects. In other words, Earth do self rotate and also rotates around the Sun in an axis which determines the cycle of day and night.

Moon rotates around the axis of Earth different to that of Earth's axis around the Sun. This rotation shows the waxing and waning of Moon.

When the moon is in-between Sun and Earth, the Sun light does fall on the back of Moon and not viewed in Earth which is the New Moon day or Amavasya. This position of the moon is considered 0°. When the moon is far away from Sun that is 180° from the first position, the Sun light falls completely on the Moon to be viewed in Earth which is the Full Moon day or Pournami.

Simple explanation

If the moon and sun is on the same side of the earth, the sun light falls on the back of the moon so it cannot be viewed and it is the New Moon day.

If the moon and sun is opposite side of the earth, the sun light completely falls on the moon to be viewed and it is the Full moon day.

The cycle from new moon to full moon is waxing and full moon to new moon is waning. In this process the stages of moon is called as Crescent or Gibbous. If the Crescent is right side or northern hemisphere, it is the waxing Crescent or Gibbous. If the Crescent is left side or southern hemisphere, it is the waning Crescent or Gibbous.

"Dream, dream, dream. Dreams transform into thoughts and thoughts result in action." -A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

We dream while the moon is risen some dream to reach the moon and the dream transformed in to action by our Indian scientists.

India's first mission to Moon, was launched successfully on October 22, 2008 from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota. The spacecraft was orbiting around the Moon at a height of 100 km from the lunar surface for chemical, mineralogical and photo-geologic mapping of the Moon. The spacecraft carried 11 scientific instruments built in India, USA, UK, Germany, Sweden and Bulgaria.

After the successful completion of all the major mission objectives, the orbit has been raised to 200 km during May 2009. The satellite made more than 3400 orbits around the moon and the mission was concluded when the communication with the spacecraft was lost on August 29, 2009.

When we read we all correlate with a movie of our regional language. Here i want to cite 'Mission Mangal' movie which showcases the launching of spacecraft and other tracking events. 'Tik tik tik' is another movie to experience the inside of the spacecraft. Hope you all enjoy the ride...
